Do You Have the Hottest In-Demand Skill Now?

AI is now trending worldwide across organisations big and small as each take up arms for the digital revolution. But are we forgetting the people within the organisation? Do they have the skills and competencies needed to handle AI in the workplace? Professor Ben-Israel, a board member of Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research, cautions of the immediate need to plug the current gap in AI leadership to ensure that industries critical to economic growth continue to flourish. He added: “While you can temporarily fill the talent gap by using foreigners, you must develop your own (people) to meet national demands over the long term.”

Now, what is it then that we must develop? A repertoire of programming languages? The ability to understand algorithms? More focus on STEM on top of the already rigorous science and math curriculum that we have in schools? Sounds like a stressful future for those of us who are not STEM experts…

But fret not because we have good news! A 2017 research by Paul Daugherty and H. James Wilson has revealed that soft skills are actually becoming much more valuable as we bridge the gap between man and machine.

dcHR.tech's question:

The 4 important skills are:

  • Complex Reasoning

  • Creativity

  • Social & Emotional Intelligence

  • Sensory Perception

Looking at the 4 soft skills above, some might even say that AI and machines are freeing us to do what we do best – be human. As the authors explained: “we saw a lot of promise for AI to change jobs and create jobs and make more human jobs – or make jobs more human – in many steps.” As much as automation is replacing humans in certain tasks, there is still much that we as humans need to do in managing these automations. Thought must also be put into upgrading current skillsets and developing new competencies to prepare for the new wave of jobs that the industrial revolution 4.0 will bring about.
