For many freshmen, university marks the start of an exciting – and sometimes overwhelming – journey.

At the recent Nanyang Business School (NBS) Freshman Orientation, we had the opportunity to join industry peers to give students a glimpse into various business functions and industries, helping them better understand the career possibilities their degrees could open up.

Held on 6 August 2025 at Gaia, Nanyang Technological University’s newest zero-energy building, the event was attended by bright-eyed first-year students pursuing Accountancy or Business at NBS.

They were keen to hear real-world insights from speakers representing leading organisations, including Amazon, Baker Tilly, LinkedIn, McCann, Procter & Gamble, Singlife, Singtel and UOB.

Through candid sharing, the speakers painted a realistic picture of what to expect in different roles, the skills needed to thrive, and the career paths that could unfold.

Iris Lew, DecodeHR’s Senior Engagement Manager, spoke about the vital role of human resources in organisations, the various touchpoints across the employee lifecycle, and the human attributes that make a great HR professional – from empathy and integrity to problem-solving and analytical thinking.

Leong Pik Yin, our firm’s Head of Marketing, shed light on the distinctions between marketing, communications, and public relations. She also highlighted some of the most valued skills, such as communication, adaptability, and project management, as well as the diverse career paths this field can offer.

The energy in the room was undeniable – students engaged enthusiastically, asking thoughtful questions even after the session ended. Their eagerness to learn and make well-informed decisions about their future was evident. We left feeling inspired, knowing that these next-generation business leaders are driven, curious, and ready to explore their potential.

It was a privilege to play a part in their journey, and we look forward to continuing to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
